About Garhwa District

The erstwhile Garhwa Subdivision of Palamu district, comprising eight blocks, was separated from Palamu district and established as an independent district, Garhwa, with effect from 1 April 1991.

Garhwa district is situated in the southwestern part of the Palamu Division of Jharkhand. It lies between 23°06′ and 24°39′ N latitude and 83°22′ and 84°00′ E longitude.

The district is bounded by the River Sone to the north; Palamu district and the state of Chhattisgarh to the south; Palamu district to the east; and Surguja district of Chhattisgarh and Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh to the west.

Garhwa is a part of the Palamu Division and is administratively divided into three subdivisions—Garhwa, Ranka, and Nagar-Untari—and 20 blocks.
